ABOUT PAVONES

In this small town, development is vaguely present. The most dramatic change was the installation of electricity 9 years ago. The roads, albeit bumpy, are maintained better than before. (And slowly but surely the 'Ticos' are learning to NOT throw their garbage in the streets!) Cell phones are the mainstay to communications with the outside world. 'Hard' phone lines have been forecast to be installed "within the year" for the last 4 years now.

There are no banks or post offices: we go to Golfito for these services. It is best to bring dollars (US) or "colones" (Costa Rican) for all spending in Pavones as travelers cheques are rarely cashed and credit cards are NOT accepted anywhere, so far.

Pavones' town center is a soccer field ("plaza de futbol") fringed by little businesses. We have a few small supermarkets ("pulperias"), a basic hardware store, many 'cabinas' and a growing variety of restaurants.

There is an eye-catching gift store found in the very center of Pavones called 'Arte Nativo.' Original artwork by Candyce Speck and many unique souvenirs are found inside.

Sharing the same location is also the local surf shop SeaKings. Alex has new and used surf boards for sale, as well as many surf accessories such as wax, fins, leashes and kickpads etc. Surf and boogie boards are also available for rent.

Note: Beaches in Pavones are undeveloped and unpopulated. Naturally landscaped by high and low tides the coastline is a mixture of sand and rock. There are no dangerous riptides but swimmers should be aware of tidal currents.
